Banyumulek Pottery Cooperative

The village cooperative on the main road through Banyumulek brings together work from dozens of households under one roof. It is the easiest place to get a sense of the range of the craft — from small candle-holders and bowls suitable for hand luggage to the large rattan-wrapped storage jars that the village is best known for. Prices are fixed and reasonable; haggling is not expected here, although you can ask politely for a small reduction on larger pieces.

The cooperative also handles international shipping, which makes it the realistic option for anyone who falls in love with one of the metre-high jars. Crating and sea freight to Europe or North America takes six to eight weeks and is much cheaper than air freight. Bring your own tape measure if you are buying for a specific spot at home — the pieces look much larger inside the showroom than in your living room.
