The Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress is the strongest single stop in Agats, with carvings, shields, drums, masks, and other pieces that explain why Asmat art is known well beyond Papua. It was founded by the local Catholic diocese with help from collectors and anthropologists, and its collection is both an art museum and a cultural record.
Visit before trying to arrange village trips. The museum gives context to the ancestor poles and carving traditions you may see along the rivers.
