Sederhana (which means "simple" in Indonesian) is one of the most famous nasi padang chains in the world — it has branches across Indonesia and has been exported to Malaysia and beyond — but the original Padang restaurant carries a different weight. The quality of the rendang, the thickness of the coconut-based curries, and the freshness of the accompanying dishes is noticeably higher than in the chain's branches elsewhere.
Come at lunchtime when everything is freshest. The ritual of nasi padang eating — the waiter arriving with a tower of dishes, setting them all down, and you picking what you want — is best experienced here in the place it was invented. A full meal with rice and several dishes will cost very little by Western standards.
