Taman Budaya Cultural Centre

The West Sumatran cultural arts centre hosts traditional dance performances, music, and theatre events through the year, with Sunday performances being the most reliable for visitors. The building occupies grounds near the university and has both indoor and outdoor performance spaces.

The Sunday performances typically include samples of traditional Minangkabau dance and music — a good introduction to the culture if you are passing through Padang before heading to the highlands. The centre also offers free city tour programs through its tourism desk; ask about the current schedule when you arrive. Admission is usually free or very low-cost.

A story
Minangkabau performing arts — particularly randai, a combination of martial arts, dance, and storytelling performed in a circle — were nearly lost during the Padri Wars of the early 19th century and again during the Japanese occupation. The Taman Budaya has been one of the main institutions keeping these traditions alive through training programmes and regular public performances.
