Sumbawa Besar is the largest town on the western half of Sumbawa and the seat of its former sultanate. Its centrepiece is the Dalam Loka, a large wooden 19th-century sultan's palace on stilts. The town is the usual jumping-off point for boat trips to Moyo Island, with its waterfalls and reefs, and to the stilt-village island of Bungin.
