Getting There

Kupang's El Tari Airport is the main gateway to West Timor. Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and other Indonesian carriers operate daily flights to Kupang from Bali (around 1.5 hours) and Jakarta (around 3.5 hours). Direct connections to Bali are the most frequent and are the easiest way in from any international hub.

Ferries from Bali and other eastern Indonesian ports call at Kupang's harbour, but the journey is very long (days, not hours) and is generally only worthwhile if you enjoy sea travel or are moving freight. From East Timor, the land border crossing at Mota'ain is open to tourists with a valid Indonesian visa; buses run from Dili to the border and onward to Kupang.
