Zard Castle

Ruined hilltop fortress in the foothills south-east of Damghan

The remains of a stone-walled medieval fortress on a rocky outcrop in the foothills 7 kilometres south-east of Damghan, originally an Ismaili (Assassin) stronghold and later expanded under the Mongols. The bailey walls and a couple of round towers are the main surviving features.

The walk up takes 30 minutes and rewards with a panoramic view back to the city and the snowcapped Alborz mountains on the northern horizon. Bring water.
