A short way east of the bazaar, set on its own in a small park, the Jabaliyeh Dome is an octagonal stone-and-brick monument of mysterious origin. Most scholars date it to the Saljuq or early Mongol period (11thβ13th century), but its function β tomb? observatory? Zoroastrian shrine? β has never been settled. The construction is unusual for Kerman: dressed stone rather than the city's standard brick.
The dome is small and quickly visited, but the building has an unusual stark beauty against the desert background. A small archaeological museum in the same park displays carved tomb covers, including a number of zoomorphic Bactrian camels in stone. Allow forty-five minutes for both together.
