Malek Mosque

11th-century Seljuk mosque, one of the oldest in Iran

The Malek Mosque, also called the Imam Mosque, was built in the 11th century by the Seljuk vizier Turan-Shah and is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the country. The four-iwan plan dates from the original construction; the brickwork inside still carries its 11th-century geometry, including the famous double-shell dome.

The mosque sits a short walk from the bazaar and is far quieter than the Jameh — most visitors miss it. Modest dress; the courtyard is shaded by mature trees and is a fine place to rest mid-day. The brick decoration, in the older Seljuk geometric style rather than the later tiled work, repays slow looking.
