Gilan Rural Heritage Museum

The Gilan Rural Heritage Museum is the best cultural excursion from Rasht. Set in Saravan Forest Park south of the city, it preserves traditional wooden houses, rice barns, workshops, village spaces, and domestic interiors from the different landscapes of Gilan - coast, plain, foothill, and mountain.

What makes it work is scale. You are not looking at a few objects in glass cases; you walk between whole houses raised on timber posts, verandas built for humid weather, and courtyards arranged around everyday rural life. Food stalls and demonstrations can make it feel lively on weekends. Allow at least two hours, more if you are interested in architecture or folk culture.

A story
The museum grew from a rescue idea after the destructive 1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake, when traditional wooden houses across Gilan were disappearing fast. Rather than build replicas, teams moved real rural structures from different parts of the province and reassembled them in the forest.
