Municipality Square

Municipality Square, often called Shahrdari Square, is Rasht's postcard view: a broad urban space framed by the municipality building, clock tower, post office, and other early-20th-century civic architecture. It is not grand in the Isfahan sense, but it is handsome, walkable, and unusually coherent for a busy Iranian provincial capital.

Come in the evening when the lights come on and local families drift through the square. The bazaar is close by, so it makes a natural starting point for a walk through central Rasht. The square is also a useful landmark for taxis; almost everyone knows it.

A story
The square's clock-towered ensemble was part of Rasht's early modern civic makeover in the Pahlavi period. Its pale facades and formal proportions gave the rainy Caspian city a deliberately European municipal face, a reminder of Rasht's old trade links north across the sea.
