Eating Out

Sareyn's restaurants cater mostly to weekenders from Ardabil and Tabriz, which means they are reliable, generous with portions, and reasonably priced. Two local specialities dominate the menus. The first is grilled trout (mahi qezel ala), farmed in the cold streams around Mount Sabalan and usually served whole over saffron rice. The second is asheh dough, the Azerbaijani yoghurt soup with chickpeas, dried mint, and herbs that warms you up after a session in the baths.

For sweet things, the regional dessert is Ardabil halva, a dense saffron and walnut confection sold in slabs by every grocer along the main street. Stalls outside the bathhouses sell roasted corn and grilled meat skewers all day. Most restaurants are clustered along the central spa avenue near Sabalan Spring.
