The Amir Chakhmaq Complex centres on a grand three-storey mosque facade overlooking a large square in the middle of Yazd. The symmetrical grid of sunken arched niches, best seen just after sunset when it is lit up, is one of the iconic images of Iranian architecture. The square itself is a lively gathering spot with a traditional caravanserai, a bazaar entrance, and a restored ab anbar (underground water cistern) nearby.
Inside the complex are a mosque, a Hosseinieh, and a small bazaar. The cistern in the square, topped by its distinctive wind towers, can be visited. Climb to the roof of the complex for views over the city's rooftops and the surrounding wind towers — the silhouette of Yazd from this angle is particularly striking at dusk.
