Baghdad is served by Baghdad International Airport (BGW), located about 16 kilometres west of the city centre. Several airlines operate scheduled services including Iraqi Airways, Turkish Airlines, and a number of Middle Eastern carriers. The security situation at the airport and on the route into the city should be checked carefully before travel — access arrangements have changed over time.
Overland travel to Baghdad from neighbouring countries is possible but requires careful planning and up-to-date advice on border conditions. The land crossing from Jordan at Trebil and from Iran at Mandali are the most commonly used by overland travellers. Independent travel to Baghdad requires significant advance research; many foreign governments issue specific travel advisories for Iraq that should be read before booking.
Most foreign visitors to Baghdad arrive on organised tours or with institutional affiliations (journalists, NGO workers, researchers). Independent tourism is possible but demands careful preparation.
