The Imam Mosa Al Kadhim Grand Mosque is one of the largest Shia mosques in Basra, built to serve the city's predominantly Shia Muslim population. The mosque complex covers a substantial area and has the domes and minarets typical of Iraqi Shia religious architecture. It is an active place of worship and can be visited outside prayer times.
Non-Muslim visitors should dress conservatively (head covering for women, no shorts), be respectful, and ideally ask locally before entering. The mosque is most impressive during Friday prayers when hundreds of worshippers fill the courtyard, and during the holy days of Muharram and Ashura when religious observances reach their peak intensity. Outside of religious celebrations, the mosque is relatively quiet and visitors are generally welcomed without fuss.
