Samarra's sights are concentrated in two groups: the Abbasid-era monuments north of the modern city, and the Al-Askari Shrine in the centre. All the major monuments are within a few kilometres of each other. The area around the Great Mosque of Samarra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
