Nineteen perfectly geometric terraces of clipped hedge, lawn, and flowering shrub climbing the north face of Mount Carmel, with the gold-domed Shrine of the Báb at its heart. The gardens form the world spiritual centre of the Bahá'í faith and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The grounds are open daily but most of the terraces are visible only through guided tours starting from the upper entrance — bookings are free and run several times a day. The shrine itself sits at the middle level, accessible by a separate gate. The view down the length of the staircase over the German Colony and out to the bay is the city's defining image.
