Getting around

Haifa is steep and split across three levels — port, mid-city, and the upper Carmel — and walking between them is a workout. The Carmelit underground funicular is the fastest way up and down the slope and runs Sunday through Friday afternoon.

The Metronit, a bus rapid transit system on dedicated lanes, links the lower city to the southern suburbs and is a good way to reach the beaches at Dado and Bat Galim. Standard buses cover the rest of the city. Taxis and ride-share apps work well and are usually the easiest option after dark.

Trains do not run on Shabbat — Friday afternoon through Saturday night — but limited buses do operate in Haifa, which is one of the few large Israeli cities to maintain Saturday public transport.
