Shioya Beach

Shioya is the sandy stretch of Sea of Japan coast at the western edge of Kaga, a few kilometres north of Daishoji. It's a working beach rather than a resort — small fishing boats are pulled up on the sand, and a handful of seafood shacks operate in summer. The water is clean and shallow for some way out, and the beach is rarely crowded outside the August Obon week.

A boardwalk runs behind the dunes between Shioya and the neighbouring hamlet of Hashidate, passing a small Shinto shrine and a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Sunsets over the Sea of Japan from the beach are notable, and in winter the wind drives the waves high enough to draw a small surfing crowd. The beach is a fifteen-minute drive from central Kaga.
