Aichi Prefectural Government Office

The Aichi Prefectural Government Office, completed in 1938, is one of Japan's most distinctive examples of "imperial crown style" architecture — a steel-and-concrete western office building topped with a sweeping traditional Japanese castle roof, a deliberate design to harmonise with the neighbouring Nagoya Castle. It was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2014.

The building remains in active government use, but the lobby and a small history exhibition on the ground floor are open to the public on weekdays. The most rewarding view is from outside, especially at sunset when the green copper roof and pale stone facade catch the angled light. The neighbouring Nagoya City Hall, a smaller 1933 building in the same style, makes a natural pairing.
