Shopping

Nagoya's two great shopping zones could not be more different. Sakae is the high street: Mitsukoshi and Matsuzakaya department stores, the underground Sakae Chika, and the brand-name flagships along Otsu-dori. The new Hisaya-odori Park development opened a row of designer outlets in 2020.

Osu, fifteen minutes south on foot, is the opposite — a maze of covered arcades selling second-hand kimono, vintage cameras, anime figures, manga, and street food at very low prices. The arcades wrap around Osu Kannon temple and stay open into the evening. The Nagoya Station basement (Esca, Meichika, Unimall) is a shopping destination in its own right.
