Komeda Coffee Honten

Komeda Coffee is the Nagoya kissaten that grew into a national chain with 900-plus branches across Japan — a Showa-era coffee-shop format with wooden booths, leatherette banquettes, glass-shaded lamps, newspapers in racks, and the city's beloved "morning service" (a slice of thick toast, a boiled egg and a complimentary side of red bean paste with any drink before 11am). Open from 7am.

The flagship Honten branch in Yagoto, in the southeast suburbs, is the original 1968 store and the largest in the city; it serves the full menu of toast, sandwiches, the iconic Shironoir hot pastry with vanilla ice cream, and bottomless coffee refills for around 600 yen. Any Komeda branch will give you the experience; the Honten is for completists.
