Shizuoka Sengen Shrine is a large shrine complex near the old castle town, associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu's youth and the older religious life of Suruga Province. Its lacquered buildings are richly coloured, and the wooded slopes behind them make it feel removed from the traffic nearby.
It pairs naturally with Sunpu Castle Park. Together they give the central city enough history to stand up even if Fuji is hiding behind cloud.
