Ochidani Shrine was built in 1650 by Mitsunaka Ikeda, the first lord of Tottori. It enshrines the same deity worshipped at Nikko's Toshogu Shrine, giving this quiet local shrine a link to one of Japan's grandest sacred sites.
The shrine is also known locally as a summer firefly-viewing spot. It is a short trip from central Tottori and works well as a calm stop between the city's larger sights.
