Tottori Castle is mostly ruins now, but the site has presence. Stone walls step up the slope of Mount Kyusho, and the higher paths open to views across the city and toward the Sea of Japan.
The climb gives useful context after visiting the dunes. Tottori was not only a beach stop; it was a castle town controlling a small but distinct corner of western Honshu.
