Joeiji Temple

Joeiji Temple is best known for its garden, traditionally linked to Sesshu, the fifteenth-century Zen monk and ink painter. That connection gives the place its appeal: the garden is meant to be read as much as viewed, with stones, clipped forms, and empty space doing the work.

It is a calm stop in Yamaguchi and pairs well with the city's other temples. Come slowly, sit for a while, and let the garden's restrained composition make sense.
