Yamaguchi Daijingu was founded as a western branch of Ise Shrine, giving travellers who could not make the long pilgrimage to Ise a place to worship closer to home. Like Ise, the shrine is rebuilt on a regular cycle, and its quiet wooded setting makes it one of Yamaguchi's more atmospheric Shinto sites.
