Brown bears (higuma) are common enough on the Shiretoko Peninsula that seeing one is not a matter of luck — it is a matter of timing and positioning. The most reliable viewing spots are the Shiretoko Pass road between Utoro and Rausu in late summer, when bears concentrate at the roadside foraging for berries, and the coastal boat tours, where bears come down to the shore to feed on salmon.
The Shiretoko Nature Centre runs guided bear-watching walks with experienced naturalists, which offer close encounters with context. If driving independently, the pass road in the early morning or evening is most productive — pull over carefully and stay in your vehicle. Bears here are habituated to cars but not to people on foot; maintain distance and do not attempt to approach. Guided kayaking tours along the coast also offer bear encounters from a safe vantage point.
