Things to Do

Shiretoko's appeal is almost entirely natural. Shiretoko Goko Lakes are the most visited attraction — five crater lakes in old-growth forest with boardwalk access. Kamuiwakka Falls is a warm volcanic waterfall you can wade up through its pools. The Cape Shiretoko cruise from Utoro covers the inaccessible cliffs and coastline to the peninsula tip.

Wildlife watching is exceptional year-round: brown bears along the Shiretoko Pass road and coast, whale watching from Rausu in summer, and drift ice viewing with its massive sea eagle concentrations in winter. Mount Rausu is the peak for serious hikers.
