Miyazu Castle

Miyazu Castle is a modest flatland castle in the centre of Miyazu city, a short train ride from Amanohashidate Station. Only the stone foundation walls remain — the wooden keep was demolished during the Meiji era — but the site commands good views over Miyazu Bay and the sandbar in the distance.

The castle was built in 1580 and served as the seat of the Kyogoku clan, then the Honma clan, through the Edo period. The grounds are now a public park, and the position looking out over the bay makes it easy to understand why this was a strategically important site for whoever controlled the northern Kyoto coast.
