Getting Around

Kansai has an excellent rail network that makes moving between cities easy and fast. The main intercity connections:

  • Kyoto–Osaka: Multiple options — JR Shinkaisoku (27 min), Hankyu Kyoto Line (44 min, cheaper, no reservation needed), Keihan Line (similar time). Hankyu and Keihan are not covered by the JR Pass but are often more convenient.
  • Osaka–Nara: Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka Namba is the fastest option (35 min); JR also connects via the Yamatoji Line.
  • Osaka–Kobe: JR from Osaka Station to Sannomiya takes around 20 minutes; Hankyu runs a parallel service.
  • Kobe–Himeji: JR from Sannomiya takes about 30 minutes — easy day trip territory.

The Icoca card (Japan's equivalent of Oyster/Suica) is accepted on most trains and buses throughout Kansai, including private lines. Loading it up when you arrive saves the time of buying individual tickets. Within Kyoto, the bus network covers the main temple districts; within Osaka, the subway is efficient and covers the major areas.
