Spring (March–May) is the most popular season. Cherry blossom season (sakura) peaks in Kyoto and Osaka in late March to early April, when the temples, parks, and riverside paths are genuinely spectacular. The crowds are at their worst at this time — Maruyama Park in Kyoto and the Philosopher's Path can feel overwhelmed. Book accommodation months in advance if travelling in the first two weeks of April.
Autumn (October–November) is equally beautiful for the autumn leaf colour (koyo), with fewer crowds than spring. Red maple, ginkgo, and zelkova turn Kyoto's temple gardens into painter's palettes. The period around mid-November is the peak.
Summer (June–August) is hot, humid, and occasionally oppressive — Kyoto can hit 38°C with high humidity in July and August. The city's traditional Gion Matsuri festival runs through July, with the main processions on July 17 and 24. This is a major cultural event but hotel prices spike accordingly.
Winter (December–February) is cold but manageable and much less crowded. Snow on Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) is one of the great travel photographs and worth hoping for. Kyoto light-up events run in December in many temple gardens. January and February are genuinely quiet.
