Osakabe Shrine

Osakabe Shrine is the small shrine perched at the top of Himeji Castle's main keep, dedicated to the spirit said to have inhabited the hill long before the castle. You will pass it briefly as part of the castle visit; pause for the view through the wooden windows out across the bailey.

The shrine has been moved several times — off the keep in the late nineteenth century, then quietly back when townspeople insisted bad luck had followed its eviction. It is not a destination in itself but a good footnote to the castle, and a nice example of how syncretic Japanese religious practice still is.

A story
After Osakabe Shrine was moved off the keep in the Meiji era, locals blamed a run of misfortune on the displaced kami. The shrine was eventually rebuilt on the top floor of Himeji Castle, where it sits today — one of the very few cases of a working Shinto shrine being absorbed into a national treasure.
