When to Go

Kobe is a year-round destination, and each season has something to recommend it.

Spring (March–May): Cherry blossom season peaks in late March to early April. The Kitano district, Sōraku-en Garden, and the paths along the rivers in the mountain foothills are particularly beautiful. Crowds are significant at the most famous spots, but Kobe draws fewer visitors than Kyoto and Osaka during the peak season.

Summer (June–August): Hot and humid, as with all of the Kansai region. The mountains behind the city are cooler and the ropeway to the Rokko plateau provides escape from the heat. Arima Onsen is pleasant in the evenings even in summer. July brings fireworks over the harbour.

Autumn (September–November): The best time to visit for comfortable weather and autumn colour. The maple trees in Kitano-chō and Sōraku-en turn red and orange from late October. The Kobe Jazz Street festival, held in October, is one of the better music events in the Kansai region.

Winter (December–February): Cool and occasionally cold, but Kobe rarely gets snow at sea level. The Kobe Luminarie light installation in December draws millions of visitors. Arima Onsen is at its most atmospheric in winter, with the prospect of cold air and warm gold-spring baths. Hotel prices drop significantly in January and February.
