Nyonindo is the last surviving temple from the group that once stood outside Koyasan's main town for women pilgrims. Until 1872, women were forbidden to enter the sacred precinct, so these temples became their place of worship at the edge of the mountain settlement.
The temple is modest, but its history makes it a worthwhile stop while exploring Koyasan's larger monastic sites.
