Getting Around

Kyoto is flat, the grid is easy, and the city runs on an excellent bus network that connects almost every major temple. Buses are the default way to get between sights — a one-day unlimited pass costs around ¥700, and individual fares are flat. Board at the rear and pay at the front when you get off. The subway has only two lines and covers fewer places of interest than the buses, but is useful for getting north-south along Karasuma or east-west on the Tozai line. A combined one-day bus and subway pass (around ¥1,100) is good value if you plan to use both. Taxis are plentiful and honest but expensive. Perhaps the best way to see Kyoto is by bicycle — the city is gently sloped, distances are walkable to cyclable, and rentals are cheap (around ¥1,000 a day). Keep to the bike lanes where marked; otherwise, cyclists share sidewalks with pedestrians.
