Kuromon Ichiba Market

Osaka's liveliest covered food market — fresh seafood and street snacks

The city's most atmospheric covered food market, running under a long glass-roofed arcade one street east of the main Namba shopping area. The 170-plus stalls sell fresh fish, shellfish, meat, pickles, fruit, and prepared foods, and the best way to use it is as an eating experience rather than a shopping trip — most vendors sell small portions to eat standing at the stall.

The market is busiest in the early morning when chefs from Osaka's restaurants come to buy; by mid-morning it has shifted to a retail crowd and the prepared-food stalls have their full selection out. Particularly good for grilled crab, sea urchin rice bowls, and wagyu skewers. Some vendors have expanded their stalls with stools and counters to accommodate the growing tourist trade, though the core of the market retains its working character.

A story
Kuromon has been Osaka's primary wholesale food market since the 1820s, earning the nickname 'Osaka's Kitchen.' Most of the 170 stalls are still wholesale operations that sell to restaurants before 9am, but they stay open through the lunch hour selling directly to the public — crab legs, sea urchin on rice, grilled beef skewers, and fresh takoyaki.
