Osaka is a city best experienced at street level. Dotonbori — the neon-lit canal district in Namba — is the visual centrepiece and worth seeing both day and night. Osaka Castle is the obligatory landmark. For a different pace, the Shinsekai neighbourhood retains something of the city's pre-war character. Kyoto is 15 minutes by shinkansen and worth a day trip.
