Ashikaga School

Restored Confucian academy widely known as Japan's oldest school.

Ashikaga School is the city's headline sight. The restored thatched buildings, gates, library, and gardens recall a Confucian academy that drew students from across eastern Japan and was praised by early European missionaries.

There is some debate about its exact founding date, but that hardly matters once you are inside. The place feels scholarly and restrained, a good counterpoint to Japan's louder castle and temple towns.
