Ashikaga

Small Tochigi city of Ashikaga clan temples, old schools, silk history, and spring wisteria.

Ashikaga is a compact city in Tochigi Prefecture, near the Gunma border and close enough to Tokyo for a long day trip. It has far more history than its size suggests: the Ashikaga clan helped shape medieval Japan, and their temples, gardens, and scholarly traditions still give the old town a quiet dignity.

The best walk links Ashikaga School, Bannaji Temple, and the older streets north of the Watarase River. It is a small radius, and that is the appeal. You can move from a Confucian school to a moat-ringed temple without needing a timetable.

Ashikaga also has a softer side. It was once a textile town, and silk and indigo still turn up in shops and workshops. In spring, Ashikaga Flower Park pulls the crowds for its wisteria, so come early if you want the place to feel anything like the rest of the city.
