Kasori Shell Mounds

Japan's largest known Jomon shell-mound site, with preserved sections and reconstructed pit dwellings.

Kasori Shell Mounds are the best reason to visit Chiba. The large Jomon-period site preserves shell midden sections, reconstructed pit dwellings, and a small museum explaining how people lived around Tokyo Bay thousands of years ago.

It is quieter than the famous historic sights in Tokyo or Kyoto, but it is nationally important. If you like archaeology, give it proper time rather than treating it as a quick museum stop.
