Lake Senba

Lake Senba is a shallow freshwater lake on the western edge of central Mito, bordered on one side by the plateau on which Kairakuen garden sits. The lake has a walking path around its perimeter, swan boats for rent, and good views up toward the garden and Kobuntei villa from the water's edge.

In spring the lakeside cherry trees come into bloom shortly after the plum blossoms in Kairakuen, extending the blossom season for a few weeks. In the evenings the lake is peaceful and popular with local joggers. It's not dramatic scenery, but the combination of lake, garden, and traditional architecture creates a quiet, distinctively Japanese atmosphere that rewards an unhurried afternoon walk.
