Mito's main attraction is Kairakuen, one of Japan's three great gardens, which reaches its peak during the plum blossom season in late February and early March. Outside of that season, the city offers Mito Castle's remaining structures, the Art Tower's striking contemporary architecture, and the Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History.
