From Tobu-Nikkō and JR Nikkō stations (a short walk apart), local buses run up the hill to the shrine precinct every 10 to 15 minutes during the day. The walk from the stations to the Shinkyo Bridge takes about 30 minutes and is pleasant, passing through the town and along a shaded road.
The shrine complex itself is entirely walkable. Buses also run from the shrine area up the Irohazaka switchback road to Lake Chūzenji — the journey is about 40 minutes. A day bus pass covers the shrine precinct, the Kanmangafuchi Abyss loop, and Chūzenji, and is available at the tourist information office near the stations.
Cycling is possible in the lake area but the Irohazaka road is too steep and narrow for recreational cycling. Rental bicycles are available near Chūzenji.
