One of Tokyo's oldest shrines, Kanda Myojin has stood in various forms since the 8th century and is the guardian shrine of Akihabara and much of central Tokyo. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1934 in vivid vermilion and gold after the Great Kanto Earthquake. In early May it hosts the Kanda Festival, one of Tokyo's three great festivals, when portable shrines are carried through the surrounding streets.
