Odaiba

Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, built on reclaimed land and connected to central Tokyo by the Yurikamome monorail and the Rinkai Line. Originally developed as a futuristic waterfront district in the 1990s, it has an oddly spacious, almost surreal feel — wide boulevards, vast shopping malls, and a full-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty facing Rainbow Bridge.

The main draws are the Fuji Television building (a striking Kenzo Tange design), the teamLab digital art exhibitions, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), and DiverCity Tokyo Plaza with its towering Gundam statue. Odaiba also has a small artificial beach and several onsen complexes. It is popular with young Tokyoites on dates and draws big crowds on weekends, but can feel oddly empty on weekdays.
