Futaarayama Shrine is the old spiritual centre of Utsunomiya, set on a small rise above the downtown streets. The long stairway, stone lanterns, and wooded precinct make a clean break from the busy shopping arcades below.
It is best visited before or after a gyoza lunch nearby. The shrine gives the city a sense of age that is easy to miss if you only see the station area.
