The ACROS building in Tenjin is one of Fukuoka's cleverest pieces of urban architecture: a concert hall and office complex whose south face rises as a terraced garden. From street level the planted steps soften what would otherwise be a bulky civic block, and from above they create a small green climb in the middle of the city.
The rooftop garden is worth a stop if you are already around Tenjin or the nearby former castle moat. It is not a wilderness, but the layered paths, seasonal planting, and views over central Fukuoka make it a satisfying example of a city using architecture to create public space.
