Nanshu Cemetery

Cemetery of Saigō Takamori and Satsuma Rebellion dead, set on a quiet Kagoshima hillside.

Nanshu Cemetery is where Kagoshima's samurai history becomes personal. Saigo Takamori, the central figure of the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion, is buried here with thousands of men who died in the conflict, making the hillside one of the city's most resonant historical places.

The site is quiet and compact, close to Nanshu Shrine and northeast of Shiroyama. Visit after the Museum of the Meiji Restoration or Shiroyama if you want the story to connect: the rebellion stops being an abstract last stand and becomes a row of names in the city that raised them.
