Kumamoto sits on the Kyushu Shinkansen line, with direct bullet trains from Fukuoka (Hakata station, around 35 minutes) and Kagoshima (about 45 minutes). From Tokyo or Osaka, take the Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen through. The city also has its own airport, Kumamoto Airport, served by domestic flights from Tokyo Haneda and Narita, Osaka, and Okinawa. Buses connect the airport to the city centre in about 50 minutes.
